Murray First United Methodist Women’s Executive Board Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, September 27, 2016
In attendance: Jackie Beauchamp, Monica Bogle, Vicky Crafton, Nancy Doty, Debra Fannin, Carol Finn, Margaret Fritts, Kay Gupton, Pat Harris, Effie Kemp, Courtney Newman, Jan Nutter, Mary Lou Rayburn, Linda Short, and Carol Wimberley.
Meeting was called to order by President Jan Nutter. The UMW purpose was read by all members. Jan welcomed the group and offered the opening prayer.
Sunshine report: Mary Lou Rayburn presented the Sunshine Report. Since the last meeting, fourteen Thinking of You cards, six Birthday cards, three Sympathy cards, and one Get Well card were sent out.
Devotional: Linda Short read excerpts from the Prayer Calendar concerning an adult day dare center in Birmingham, Alabama and the Wesley Community Center in Savannah, Georgia. The devotional for this meeting was “Colors of Fall.”
Secretary report: Debra Fannin submitted the minutes from the August meeting for approval. Motion was made (Nancy Doty) and seconded (Margaret Fritts) and the minutes were approved by all. No correspondence had been received by the Board since the last meeting.
Treasurer report: Monica Bogle presented the Statement of Financial Income and Expense report for August through September 2016 and the Statement of Financial Position report as of September 30, 2016. Motion was made (Jackie Beauchamp) and seconded (Margaret Fritts) and approved by all to accept the report. The 2017 UMW budget was presented. Nancy Doty suggested that the name be changed for one of the expenses from “Women’s Sunday Honorarium” to just “Honorarium”. A motion was made (Kay Gupton) and seconded (Courtney Newman) to change the amount to $300 and change the amount to Local Missions to $800. Motion was approved. 2017 Carol Wimberley reported that the Wesleyan Circle gives to the Gift to Mission and Gift in Memory which is a Platinum Unit requirement. The budget was approved at the General Meeting which followed the Executive Meeting.
Program Secretary report: Jackie Beauchamp reported that books for the UMW Reading Program had been purchased and should be in the UMW library by the middle of October.
Unfinished business
A. District Mission Study - Nancy Doty thanked the Board for help with the District Mission Study which was held at Murray First on August 27, 2016. Over 60 participants attended.
B. World Thank Offering - World Thank Offering Service will be held immediately following the Board meeting. Monica Bogle and Linda Short are in charge of the program.
C. Senior Christmas Boxes for Reelfoot - Jan Nutter reported. Items have not been delivered yet but will be soon. Items collected for the boxes may also be used for the Reelfoot Rural Ministries. The Board agreed to a drive to collect peanut butter for Reelfoot with the slogan “We are going nuts over Reelfoot” . The entire Church be invited to participate.
D. District Annual Day - Carol Finn, Jan Nutter, and Carol Wimberley attended the District Annual Day which was held on September 18, 2016 at Lone Oak United Methodist Church. The program dealt with the need for improvement in the rights of women in the East Congo.
New business
A. Nativ-A-Tea - Jan Nutter reported - The Nativ-A-Tea will be on held on Sunday, December 11, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the Social Hall. Vicky Crafton is in charge of the program. Jan has asked Sandra Burnett, District UMW President, to attend and install the 2017 officers. Since all officer slots have not yet been filled, 2017 officers will be voted on prior to the installation. Loretta Kroehler and Dee Keezer will be asked to help with decorations. Jan has purchased the teas. Circles will provide food, and Vicky will provide information to the Circles prior to their November meeting. She will also ask Tiffany Clayton to provide a craft for children to make during the business portion of the Tea. Jan will invite 2016 and 2017 District Board members.
B. Backpack Preparation - Jan Nutter reported. Backpacks will be prepared on Sunday, December 18, 2016 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. They will be distributed in January 2017. 1. Outstanding Methodist Woman and Outstanding Methodist Youth - Jan Nutter reported. Jan will make sure information for these awards is included in the newsletter and in the bulletins. A committee consisting of Linda Short, Jan Nutter, the 2017 Board President and two church members at large will review the nominations.
C. UMW Board Nominations for 2017 - Vicky Crafton reported. Not all positions have been filled and nominations will be voted on prior to their installation in December.
D. Craft Fair - Margaret Fritts reported. The Craft Fair will be held at Murray First on October 23 and November 20, 2016 and during the Saturday Farmers Market on October 29. A motion was made (Carol Wimberley) and seconded (Kay Gupton) to give Margaret permission to have letters printed for a banner to promote the fair. Motion was approved. Margaret will provide a cost to Monica for reimbursement.

Mission Coordinator Reports
Membership & Nurturing - Marcia Koenecke absent
Education - Pat Harris - Pat reported from the September issue of Response magazine concerning issues from General Conference, especially those dealing with women and children. She also discussed an article dealing with new deaconesses.
Social Action - Effie Kemp - Effie asked that the Board consider having a program dealing with Human Trafficking at the the April 2017 General Meeting. Victory House in Paducah provides help to young women who are survivors of human trafficking, sexual exploitation and abuse. They will be having an open house in November.
Communications - Nancy Doty - Nancy provided a time line for changes to the UMW 2017 Directory. October 20 is the deadline for changes to the directory. A draft should be available November 15 and copies will be made December 12. New directories will be distributed in January 2017. It was suggested that the UMW Purpose be made more noticeable in the 2017 Directory.
Spiritual Growth - Linda Short - Linda is working on correspondence cards for missionaries and will bring Christmas cards to the next meeting so that Board members can sign.
UMW Book Club - Carol Finn - The meeting time for the Book Club will be changed to the second Monday of the month at 11:30. The October selection will be Coaltown Jesus. At the October meeting the group will determine which books will be included for future meetings.
Prayer Shawls - Debra Fannin - Meetings to knit and crochet are still being held on the first Sunday each month from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the Conference Room. Circle leaders were asked to check with their circles and ask who participates in the Shawl Ministry.
Circle Reports
Hope - Monica Bogle - August was a planning meeting and September was a Benefit Concert. In October they will be scrapbooking and in November they will paint door hangers. The circle has two new members.
Friendship-Hannah - Kay Gupton - August was an organizational meeting. Preparations are being made for the annual Thanksgiving Dinner.
Ruth Wilson - Jackie Beauchamp - The group has been visiting and sending cards to special friends and shut-ins that haven’t been able to attend meetings.
Tucker-Frost - Margaret Fritts - In August they traveled to Paducah to have lunch with Sally Alexander.
Wesleyan - Carol Wimberley - They have had a cookout and have provided a meal for Community Kitchen. In October they will have a Christmas workshop meeting.
The meeting was closed with a reading from Colossians 3:16-17.
The General Meeting of the UMW followed the Executive Board Meeting. The 2017 Budget was approved by the attendees. The program for this World Thank Service was provided by Heather Bennet, Executive Director of Blessed Earth Tennessee.
