Murray First United Methodist Women’s Executive Board Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, June 7, 2016
In attendance: Monica Bogle, Nancy Doty, Debra Fannin, Carol Finn, Margaret Fritts, Kay Gupton, Pat Harris, Effie Kemp, Courtney Newman, Jan Nutter, Mary Lou Rayburn, Linda Short, and Carol Wimberley
Meeting was called to order by President Jan Nutter. Jan welcomed everyone, and the UMW purpose was read by all members. This was followed by prayer.
Sunshine report: Mary Lou Rayburn presented the Sunshine Report. In April, four Sympathy cards, five Thinking of You cards, three Birthday cards, and two Get Well cards were sent. In May, one Congratulations card, one Sympathy card, six Thinking of You cards, and six Birthday cards were sent.
Devotional: Linda Short provided information from the Prayer Calendar concerning God’s purpose and beautiful creations and ways women are being equipped to improve their physical and psychological health. She then read “How to Survive the Stress of Summer” by Tracie Miles.
Secretary report: Debra Fannin submitted the minutes from the April Board meeting for approval. Motion was made (Effie Kemp) and seconded (Courtney Newman) and the minutes were approved by all. Correspondence was received from Kristen Schwartz (thank you for support with UMK on Star Wars night) and from Diane Harrison from Grace Place United Methodist Church (thank you for gifts to support their ministry). The Board was asked to keep her in our prayers as Grace Place relocates and as she deals with recent personal loss.
Treasurer report: Monica Bogle presented the Statement of Financial Income and Expense report for April through May 2016 and the Statement of Financial Position report as of May 31, 2016. Motion was made (Linda Short) and seconded (Pat Harris) and approved by all to accept the report. Monica also reported that the District Treasurer has asked that all donations go through their office so that they can better track UMW giving. Monica also asked that we provide to her monetary values for non-monetary items (eg. sewing kits) so that she can use that information for her Annual Giving Report
Program Secretary report: No report due to Jackie Beauchamp’s absence
Mission Coordinator Reports
Membership & Nurturing - No report due to Marcia Koenecke’s absence
Education - Pat Harris - The May Response magazine dealt with Women’s Conference. She had just received the June issue but challenged everyone to try and read at least half of it each month.
Social Action - Effie Kemp - Carol Wimberley and Pat Harris were thanked for the April’s “Call to Pray & Self Denial” program. Reverend Diane Harrison from Grace Place United Methodist Church was the speaker. She also encourage everyone to read New World Outlook which is in the UMW Library. Nancy Doty also offered to share her copies. Reading New World Outlook is a requirement of the UMW Reading Program.
Communications - Nancy Doty - Nancy encouraged everyone to look at the Spring issue of the UMW News. Murray First UMW was included in the news.
Spiritual Growth - Linda Short reported that Katie Heierman needs prayer partners for youth who are going on their summer mission trip.
Circle Reports
Hope Circle - Monica Bogle - In April, the Hope Circle’s program dealt with yoga and in May they ate dinner at Jasmines. The Father/Daughter Dance in April was a success, and they will begin planning for next year’s dance in August.
Friendship-Hannah - Kay Gupton - In May, Friendship - Hannah had their annual Salad Supper meeting. The group will not meet in June or July. August will be their planning meeting.
Ruth Wilson - Effie Kemp -In April Debra Fannin presented a program on the Prayer Shawl Ministry.
Tucker-Frost - Margaret Fritts - During the summer, members of the Tucker-Frost Circle will be taking youth out to lunch. In August they will visit and have a devotional with Sally Alexander who has moved to Paducah.
Wesleyan - Carol Wimberly - In June the Wesleyan Circle plans to go out to eat and to play bingo. In July they will have a salad lunch with a 50’s theme.
Unfinished business
A. Women’s Celebration - Jan Nutter reported. Celebration will be on June 8th from 6:00 - 8:00pm. She thanked all who have been involved in planning and scheduling the entertainment. Nancy reported that she has contacted all past Outstanding United Methodist Women and all past UMW presidents so that they can be recognized.
New business
A. District Mission Study - Jan Nutter reported. District Mission Study will be held on August 27, 2016 at Murray First United Methodist Church. We will need sound equipment for the program. A registration and a book room area will need to be set up. Registration will be 9:00 am and the program will run from 9:30 am - 2:30 pm. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
B. 150 Year Legacy Fund - Jan Nutter reported. Information concerning the Legacy Fund for 150 years of UMW was passed out at the last meeting. Donation cards were distributed and the Board was asked to consider whether donation would be made as a unit or by individuals. Margaret Fritts asked what the money will be used for. Nancy Doty reported that the interest from the fund is used to support missionaries, and she mentioned that we had a missionary for a number of years. Kay Gupton suggested that the donation be given as a unit. Nancy Doty suggested that each circle set aside money now so that a larger donation can be made in 2019 when the money is due and that this could be incorporated with the Women’s Celebration that year. A motion was made (Margaret Fritts) and seconded (Nancy Doty) and approved by all.
C. World Thank Service - So as not to conflict with Fall Break, the date for the October Executive UMW Board Meeting and for the the World Thank Service is being changed from October 4, 2016 to September 27, 2016. Tucker-Frost and Wesleyan Circles will provide lunch for the World Thank Service.
D. OMW and OMY - Forms for the Outstanding Methodist Woman and for Outstanding Methodist Youth will be distributed at the September 27 Executive Board Meeting.
E. December Christmas Tea - Jan Nutter - the December Christmas Tea will be on Sunday, December 11, 2016 at 2:00pm. 2017 officers will be installed at the Tea.

Reports

Prayer and Self Denial Program - Jan Nutter reported. Event was well attended and everyone enjoyed the program on Grace Place United Methodist Church.
Prayer Shawl Ministry - Debra Fannin reported. In April a presentation was given to the Ruth Wilson Circle which discussed the Prayer Shawl Ministry. The Knitting Cafe continues to meet from 2:00-4:00 pm on the first Sunday of each month.
UMW Reading Program and Book Club Updates - Carol Finn reported. Members participating in the book club will meet the criteria for Plan 2 of the UMW Reading Program. Club will be off for the summer and will start again in September.
Effie Kemp asked that everyone pray for the Nicaraguan Mission team.
The meeting was closed with a reading from Colossians 3:16-17.
