The devotional given goes along with items in the prayer calendar:
1. The first is from a Hispanic ministry lady - from Ohio annual conference.
2. The second talked about a sick 9-year-old boy. One day he opened his eyes and smiled, and he knew he had been with Jesus. This is much like mission--learning love, giving it. This story is from Kenya. Shows
what mission work is all about and the difference that one person can make in someone else.
Devotion is a poem from the 19th century, written by Jan Karon. "I Sing a Song of the Saints of God" ("The Saints of God are just folks like me" was a quote from the poem).
Will share a closing prayer later in the meeting.

Be available in June for everybody--the new guidelines for the UMW (last expired in 2012).
-Unfinished Business:
A. Thanks to Effie & Jan for “Prayer & Self Denial”-Carol Finn
Great program! Thanks to them for getting her here. It was about abuse against women.
Report on District Mission Study on Poverty & Lakeshore retreat-Carol Finn
No one attended Lake Shore.
Mission study on poverty (Jackie, Paula Hulick, Carol and Effie Kemp attended)--emphasized the problem with poverty - not just world wide, but here in our own backyard. Was discussed how we can help to eliminate it, but it
is a very complicated issue. Paula bought the booklet on poverty (women, single mothers, children, senior citizens). We do do a good job recognizing issues, but what UMW does collectively (nation, etc) does a
lot. Many programs are enhanced due to a collective effort. The leader did not know about the backpack program.
60 volunteers at Stahler farm packing 20,256 meals (rice). This makes an impact in our community. These packets are put in the backpacks too. (reported by Linda)
Summary of Candle Burning (big thank you to Nancy Doty & Monica Bogle)-Carol Finn
Total amount of money was $1780.00. More and more people are becoming aware of
it. Our candle burned for one hour. Extra thanks to Donna for getting it going in the Early light.
In past years the district board has honored the Outstanding Methodist Women. Do we want to continue this on a district level? Maybe doing the past ten members (idea). Can we do a set amount that honors all of the past
honorees (idea). What amount of money is good--perhaps $100? This would come out of our treasury.
Donna made a motion that we give $100 for honoring the past recipients of outstanding
women. Monica seconded the motion. Motion Passed.
Cards--Monica has about 150 cards. We discussed giving them to the circles because very few that weren't circle members donated in the past.
Putting information about the candle burning in the worship service has helped to raise awareness.
Women’s Celebration Dinner (tomorrow @ 6 pm/final details: Paula Hulick & Carol Finn)
Plans are on track as reported by Carol. Those in charge of decorations have it under control. Paula and Nancy have written the script. Carol will be delivering the script. Paula will not be here. Paula said that
everything is in good shape (decorations - the knitting and stitching). Invitations were sent out. Carol sent out 37 invitations to those who participated in the sew-a-thon but not members. Paula received a card from
one that cannot attend, but was grateful to be invited. Carol shared a similar story. A concern was raised that the time is not consistent on all fliers or information pages. Carol Wimberly would like a table set up her
stuff. The other women will be meeting at 10:00 A.M. They will also be back at 5:00 to finish set up and preparations. One table will be for Wesleyan circle to show their bags they make for walkers. Tucker Frost and Wesleyan circle are in charge of setting up. Friendship Hanna and Ruth Wilson are in charge of clean up. Carol checked with Joe Pat and we do not need to take down the tables and chairs. Drinks and rolls provided.
Guidelines for Outstanding Methodist Woman: Paula Hulick
Kay, Paula, and Nancy clarified the language in the guidelines. Thought they needed a detailed statement of why nominees should be considered (#9). Guidelines can only be changed (if needed) before August. Forms are out in August and not due until December 1. Paula gave two handouts. First was the Guidelines for selection of "Outstanding Methodist Woman". The second was the nomination form.
Need an announcement in worship service--perhaps during "A Call To Action".
Kay makes a motion to accept these forms with the below corrections: Donna seconded the motion. Motion passed.
1. On the nomination form--should the word "applicant" be changed to "nominee"? The nomination form is going to be changed to "nominee" in stead of "applicant".
2. #11 on Guidelines--should be finished "BY" January and not "IN" January. This will be changed as well.
3. Paula will make another change: under #4, add "nor may an individual nominate themselves".
-New Business
A. Appoint committee to review guidelines for “Outstanding Methodist Youth”: Carol Finn
Carol has talked to Amanda and Katy that before Amanda leaves that the committee (Vicky Crafton, Monica Bogle, and Effie Kemp) get together and tweak the process for selecting "Outstanding Methodist Youth". It needs to be advertised and publicized even more than it was (was announced during worship service).
It was announced on youth Sunday. Amanda did not want to announce because she didn't want others to think she had anything to do with the selection and that it needs to be a someone else like a UMW member. Suggested doing this meeting in early July before Amanda leaves. Guidelines need to be spelled out. The same committee (for choosing Outstanding Woman and outstanding youth) did it this time. Selection of youth is based on the write-up, so the committee doesn't have to know the youth. These all need to be spelled out specifically. Come back with a report in August to the board.
Paula's concern: is it our role as UMW selecting the outstanding Methodist youth? Vicky suggests it doesn't really matter who does it because its based on a write up. Or, should this be something that should come from
somewhere else. Amanda has said that she doesn't want it to come from the youth department because of favoritism concerns. This is the first year we have done the outstanding youth. Effie and Monica brought it up as an idea to have an outstanding youth. This can help encourage our youth. However, discussion is occurring because we are not sure who should be in charge of it. An effort to bridge the gap between the youth and UMW. If there was a Christian Ed committee, it would be the best one to take ownership of outstanding youth, however we don't have one, which is why UMW presently has this role. If the current committee could meet and create separate guidelines for the selection of the outstanding youth. The guild lines for selection of the outstanding Methodist Women has a guide to create the outstanding youth guidelines. This can all help bring youth forward in
some of the things that UMW does and give them opportunities to be more involved and aware. There is a push to try and included younger people.
UMW Circles & Vacation Bible School & preparing dinners: Carol Finn
It has been proposed that the circles each take a day and be responsible for the meals at VBS. Carol asked Kristen to write down specifically what she had in mind. In the past Amanda has been in charge of purchasing the food for every day. All circles, but the Hope Circle are being asked because most members of the Hope Circle are helping throughout the whole week. Someone is needed to buy and pick up the food (after seeing what is needed) using the Church Credit card. Make preparations for the meal. In the evening that same circle would be responsible for serving the food (about 250 meals). Kristen provided a scheduled of who eats when. She provided the menus. The circle is also responsible for clean up, including trash, and cleaning the kitchen. No circle is specified for Friday night, which is Pizza night, however, volunteers are need to help serve. She is
proposing that 6 people be there from the circles. There are 4 participants found by Kristen that will be
volunteering all week.
It is suggested by a member of the board that perhaps the parents stay to help with serving the meals. It was suggested that the circles only prepare the meals. Maybe there could be two shifts. There are some challenges to getting this organized--no circles are meeting between now and August, so all correspondence will need to help electronically. Also, there is concern that the Ruth Wilson circle doesn't have enough to help in the evening. Another concern brought up is that there is a lot of room for error--passing the credit card from one person to the next. It's a big undertaking and perhaps maybe would be better to start this next year. This is an outreach to the
community--it is a way to administer to our children and youth. What if we do the "day" part? There is a lot of discussion of how we may be able to help without taking on the whole project. Kristen is trying to get more
adult leaders instead of just youth. Can Kristen increase the number of volunteers in the evening and the circles do the preparation?
We are tabling this discussion until next year. Paula will contact Kristen. She will suggest that the circles (Paula, Nancy, Jan, Kay, Donna, Linda, Marcia, Jackie, Margaret, and Carol are willing) will help during the day
with buying food and cooking. Other volunteers will need to be found for the evening.
This should be brought up at the October meeting to start discussion of VBS for 2014.
Layette Assembly: Carol Finn
Kay Gupton has been working with Terease Shemwell and Tiffany Clayton (new chairperson of layettes). There were 22 layettes that hadn't been delivered to the hospital. Kay and Dana Bazzel delivered them yesterday
(June 3). Some items hadn't been used. Inventory will be given to Tiffany. Carol West has given the bags. The cards that Nancy had done before and they are being done. Paula said books will be here. They have been ordered. Assembly will begin in August.
D. Qualifying for a Mission Unit Award: #’s 6, 8, 11, 12, 16, 18.-Paula Hulick
By August we need to be looking at preparing our mission report. The "Mission
Today Unit" to qualify for Award
#8 - members read books and response magazine.
#11 - contributed to all listed? Monica reports that we haven't done a gift in memory. Could we, as a board, give money. Paula made a motion that we give $10 as a unit for gift in memory. Carol seconded the motion.
All gifts should be given through Monica. Money given to Monica goes straight to UMW conference.
#12 - the Response counts.
#16 - UMW potluck has invited non members. Martha Campbell (District President) has been invited to the Women's Celebration.
#18 - mini spiritual growth retreat - Paula will contact Martha Campbell to follow up on details of this.
A question was raised: Why is it important that we are doing this just for the Platinum? Paula is gathering information so that when she has to give the report she has all the correct information.

RESPONSE MAGAZINE REVIEW
KY pledge $170,000 and gave about $209,000! Pat likes to start with the "think page". She read it to us. UMY introduces Mission You--
She likes to look at "How to use this Issue" before she reads the magazine. Pat read this to us. "How do we view life? How can we make life the way that it is supposed to be?"
Pat read an article about "Abundance". Enough is enough. Be happy with what we have - only replace those necessary items.
Pat closed with a few lines from a prayer. We have talked a lot about human trafficking and poverty.
Social Action: Effie Kemp
Effie Kemp was not in attendance at today's meeting.
Communications: Marcia Koenecke
Everything is completed for the women's celebration. She made the fliers "Knittin' and Stitchin'.

There was a good article in the newsletter about the history of the kneeling pads at the alters. This article will be saved as well. The Tucker Frost UMW circle cleaned the pads and re-stuffed them to preserve their history.
Spiritual Growth: Linda Short
Remember to be in prayer for our Nicaragua mission team. The youth are leaving for St. Louis tomorrow and UMW are putting together the lunches for tomorrow. Be in prayer for Oklahoma and poverty.

Tucker Frost
The activity's director from the Weak's center about activities available to older people. Some people went to Paducah last week to shop for Effie's Operation Blessings. A member's mother died and the group went to
visitation. Their circle is trying to be with whoever needs them, not necessarily what the circle needs.
Wesleyan
They will be meeting June 17 at Kenlake to eat and have fun. May meet up in July or August. They will be feeding the Angel's Clinic people in July. The lady from the clinic gave a program on what service the Angels
clinic provide and who qualifies for care there. This circle made the favors for the Women's Celebration potluck.
The director of Angel's Attic is willing to come and speak.
-60 second book review
Book missing from library - they cannot find it. "Permission to Speak Freely". It is one of our book son the list. Written by Anne Jackson. Faith and real life can coexist. She has an addition, and when she became a christian, she struggled with the two coexisting. She talks about her struggles.
It's an easy read.
