In attendance: Jackie Beauchamp, Monica Bogle, Vicky Crafton, Nancy Doty, Debra Fannin Carol Finn, Margaret Fritts, Pat Harris, Marcia Koenecke, Courtney Newman, Jan Nutter, Mary Lou Rayburn, Linda Short, and Carol Wimberley
Meeting was called to order by President Jan Nutter. The UMW purpose was read by all members. Jan welcomed and thanked everyone for being in attendance. New members, Vicky Crafton, Marcia Koenecke, and Mary Lou Rayburn, were introduced. Jan then gave an opening prayer.
Sunshine report: Mary Lou Rayburn reported. She thanked the Hope Circle for providing handcrafted card for this ministry.
Devotional: Linda Short provided information from the Prayer Calendar concerning a missionary in Mexico near the the US/Mexican border, information from Kansas City, Missouri, and from Global Ministries in Mission, Columbia. She read from the book “Permission to Speak Freely” concerning childhood memories of “Church Clothes.” She then followed with prayer.
Secretary report: Minutes from the December meeting were presented: motion was made (Pat Harris) and seconded (Nancy Doty) and approved by all to accept the minutes. Thank you notes from CASA, Wesley Foundation, Murray Tiger Christmas, and Habitat for Humanity were received.
Treasurer report: Monica Bogle provided the Statement of Financial Income and Expense report for December 2015 and January 2016 and the Statement of Financial Position report as of January 31, 2016. Motion was made (Margaret Fritts) and seconded (Jackie Beauchamp) and approved by all to accept the report.
Program Secretary report: Jackie Beauchamp reported that all the 2016 reading list books are available in the library. Response magazine has been reordered. Anyone needing books for Mission U was asked to let Jackie know so that she can order them.
Unfinished business
A. CASA - Jan Nutter reported. 273 new/used books and 8 puzzles were received during November and December 2015 and have been delivered to CASA.
B. UMW Reading Program and Book Club Updates - Carol Finn reported. The book “I Am Malala” was discussed at the January meeting. February’s meeting will be held on February 11th in the conference room. The February book will be “January First” which deals with a child’s mental illness and highlights metal health issues in our country.
C. Sew-A-Thon - Margaret Fritts reported that each day between 15 to 26 people attended this year’s Sew-A-Thon to cut out shorts, dresses, and blankets. Anna Wright was presented with a pin for helping with the Sew-A-Thon for 15 years. This year we will ask other ladies in the Purchase District to help with sewing. Prior to next year’s event, Margaret would like to have a video which demonstrates how to cut out and sew the dresses. She plans to contact Brandon Story for help with the video. It was suggested that an instructional workshop would be helpful and Margaret will discuss with Anna Wright and Loretta Kroehler.
D. Outstanding Methodist Woman, Outstanding Methodist Youth - Outstanding Methodist Woman has been selected and will be announced on February 21st. Linda Short will present the pin. No Outstanding Methodist Youth was selected this year.
E. Shawl Ministry - Debra Fannin reported. In January a presentation was given to the Friendship-Hannah Circle which discussed the Prayer Shawl Ministry. In addition to the full size prayer shawls, pocket prayer shawls are also being made. A Facebook page, Murray First Knitting, has been set up. The next Knitting Cafe is schedule for February 7th. The Knitting Cafe meets monthly, typically on the first Sunday from 2-4 in the Conference Room to provide knitting/crocheting instructions and fellowship.
F. December Nativ-A-Tea - Jan Nutter reported. Jan thanked everyone for making the tea a success. Next years meeting should be planned by the August Board Meeting There was some confusion this time as to which officers are installed at the tea and this will need to be determined prior to the December 2016 Nativ-A-Tea,. Also, we need to make sure that the piano in the Social Hall is unlocked. In UMW 2016 Directory, the date for the Tea shown on page 3 needs to be changed to December 11. The date is correct in the calendar on page 35.
G. UMW Women’s Ministry Sunday - Courtney Newman reported. Women’s Ministry Sunday is scheduled for Sunday, February 21, 2016. Elyse Bell will be speaking. Two ushers from each circle are needed,; one for the early service and one for the late service. Courtney will contact Elyse and ask what ministry she would like to choose for a donation to be sent. Motion was made (Carol Finn) and seconded (Margaret Fritts) to send $100 to the charity of her choice. The motion was approved. A motion was made (Margaret Fritts) and seconded (Monica Bogle) to add a line to our budget specifying $100 for the speaker for Women’s Ministry Sunday each year. Motion was approved.
H. Backpack Ministry - Jan Nutter reported and thanked all who participated. Items that were leftover were provided to Donya Hall to be distributed through Help House.
I. Website or Blog for Special Friends - Margaret Fritts reported. Since special friends information is included in the UMW Directory a website/blog will not be needed at this time.
J. Women’s Celebration - Jan Nutter reported. The 2016 Women’s Celebration will be held on June 8th. Ways to increase participation such as inviting more women and possibly using the bus were discussed. If the bus is used, one of the approved bus drivers would be required. The event will include a potluck dinner. It was suggested that this year’s event be more social and entertaining and ideas for entertainment included a comedian, Old Duffers and Powder Puffers, a barber shop quartet, and a mystery dinner.
K. Last Day of School Ice Cream Social - This event would be scheduled for a day after both schools districts are dismissed for the summer. Serving ice cream from Dairy Queen was suggested.
New business
1. Opening an Umbrella Against Human Trafficking - Umbrellas are used to highlight human trafficking since umbrellas are protecting and shielding. Four photos show women from Murray First United Methodist Church were submitted and can be viewed on the UMW Flickr page.
2. Children’s Sabbath - Children’s Sabbath will be March 20th. Kristen has not requested any help for this service.
3. Holy Week Lunches - Lunches will be provided following the services during Holy Week.

Wednesday - Wesleyan - BBQ

4. Prayer & Self-denial Program - April 5 at 11:00am. The speaker will be Diane Harrison from Grace Place, UMC. This is a United Methodist Church located inside a Women’s Correctional Facility in Tennessee. The women craft items to sell and use the money for missions. Carol Wimberley will contact her to find out what items she needs to help support this ministry. A motion was made (Pat Harris) and seconded (Marcia Koenecke) to provide her with an honorarium. Motion was approved.
5. Youth Sunday - April 24th. No Outstanding Methodist Youth was selected this year.
6. Candle Burning Service - May 22nd. - Jan Nutter will get the forms and have a Call to Action for Candle Burning.
7. Food for Wesley Foundation - The Board will provide food for the Wesley group at MSU on March 8th. Food will need to be there by 6 pm.

Membership & Nurturing - Marcia Koenecke - Four people have been contacted and the information forwarded to circle leaders
Education - Pat Harris - Reviewed information from Response Magazine including information for the Lenten season, mission maps, Black History Month, and cultivating an antiracist white identity.
Communication - Nancy Doty - Doris Frazer has retired from Help House. Nancy suggested a card shower for her birthday on March 7th to thank her for all she has done to support this ministry. Nancy also reported that she may need to purge old circle minutes from the website do to space limitations.
Spiritual Growth - Linda Short read a poem, “Twice as Sweet” and have everyone a valentine.
Circle Reports
Hope Circle - Monica Bogle - in January they cut out patterns for the Sew-A-Thon and in February they will have their soup ministry. They are still collecting cereal boxes and are planning a Trades of Hope party to raise funds for shipping. They are hosting a Father/Daughter dance in April and would appreciate help from the other circles.
Friendship-Hannah - Debra Fannin - In January the group had a presentation on the Prayer Shawl Ministry and in February they will have their annual Sweetheart Dinner.
Ruth Wilson - Jackie Beauchamp - In December they had a Christmas dinner meeting. They did not meet in January and are providing a meal to the Wesley Group in February.
Tucker-Frost - Margaret Fritts - In December they had dinner at Tom’s Grill. At their January meeting they learned more about the Soup for the Soul ministry. They are also providing a meal to the Wesley Group in February.
Wesleyan - Carol Wimberly - The had a potluck dinner in December and selected new prayer partners for the year. In January they watched a film dealing with missions. In February they will have a guest speaker, Bethany Haley Williams, founder of Exile International.
