EXECUTIVE BOARD MINUTES - Feb. 2014







  • The meeting was called to order by Carol Finn, President

     

  • Installation of officers

    • Since December tea was cancelled, all circles were asked to vote on the slate of officers.  Each circles vote was reported.  The slate of officers was approved.

    • Jennifer Riley was announced as the new secretary, filling the vacancy left by Beth Myers

       

  • Purpose was read and prayer was led by Carol Finn

     

  • Sunshine Circle Report

    • Three new members have joined the circle

    • A list was supplied of people who needed get well, sympathy, and congratulations wishes.  Nancy Doty led prayer over these people.

    • Other prayer concerns were added:  Gene Wimberley in the death of his brother-in-law, Linda Short stranded with weather.

       

  • Minutes from December meeting were presented by Carol Finn.  There were no additions or corrections, and minutes were approved.

     

  • Correspondence:

    • From Calloway County resource center thanking for $50 Christmas Donation with handwritten note from the Bernard Family

    • From Freda Lovett for sympathy gift

       




  • Treasurer’s Report

    • Monica Bogle couldn’t attend, so report was given by Carol Finn

    • 2014 Budget was approved as presented

    • UMW paid $52.80 to have directories folded and stapled.

    • The Treasurer’s Report was approved as presented.

  • Reading Program

    • Jackie is doing two reading programs this month at different circles.

    • Carol praised Jackie for getting a good number and good selection of books.

    • Donna Toler got the shelves back in shape, tracking down many books that were out.

    • Carol Finn placed a poster up to promote the reading program.

    • Jackie Beauchamp reordered the “Response” magazine.

       

  • Unfinished Business

    • Book Club

      • An organizational meeting was held on Jan 16.  There were 8 people in attendance.

      • It was decided to meet once per month.

      • February 20th is next meeting in parlor with the book being:  Praying for Strangers.  February facilitator is Carol Finn. 

      • A book will be chosen each month from each category.

      • March book is The Dressmaker of Khair Khana.  The facilitator will be Susan Strong. 

      • Effie Kemp has done a write-up to put in the district newsletter, opening up the group to other churches as well.

         

    • Christmas Tea

      • Tea was cancelled due to weather.

      • We are planning to keep the same theme for next year.  Favors for tables are packed away.  The tea has been packaged in order to preserve it for use at the tea next year.

      • Carol Finn thanked all those who helped.

         

    • Outstanding Methodist Woman

      • Committee met and chose both the Outstanding Methodist Woman and Outstanding Methodist Youth

      • Those on the committee meeting were:  Frankie McNutt, Jennifer Riley, Donna Toler, Jan Nutter, and Carol Finn.  Frankie and Jennifer were at-large members.

      • There were several good applicants.  Winners will be announced at women’s Sunday and Youth Sunday.

         




  • Directories




      • 10 additional color printed directories are available for new members.

      • Several are available in the office as well.

      • Carol Wimberley reported that Nita Craig’s name needs to be added to the Directory under the Wesleyan Circle, 270-768-7048, husband Billy.

        • Jennifer Riley was added to the Hope Circle, making the total number of new members 4.

           

    • Women’s Sunday

      • Kay Gupton reported that Feb 16 is the date.

      • Vicky Crafton and Jan Nutter are in charge of Early Light ushers;  Dee Keezer is in charge of ushers for Traditional Service.  There are many ushers who have volunteered.  If there are extra, someone might have to change to Greeter.

      • Kay asks that volunteers arrive 30 minutes before the service starts.

      • We are still waiting for our speaker, Leah Wilkerson, to respond with sermon title and scripture.  Bro. Rick will be our backup if needed.

         

    • Sew-a-thon

      • Margaret Fritts reported that there were 40 volunteers.

      • Luncheons done by circles were great this year!  Fellowship was great, and friends were made.

      • There was a good article in the newspaper.

      • Carol Finn thanked Margaret Finn for all of her work in chairing this event.

         

    • Mission Study

      • We are hosting the mission study at our church on March 1.

      • Book is called The Call:  Living Sacramentally, Walking Justly

      • Beth Brown will lead the study.

      • We will provide a light lunch.  Paula Hulick is in charge of food for the event.

        • Friendship-Hannah and Tucker-Frost will provide breakfast foods.  Carol Finn will purchase orange juice.

        • Lunch will be potato soup provided by Carol Wimberley, Marilyn Vailes, Carol Finn, and Paula Hulick.  Finger sandwiches and pickles will be proved by Wesleyan Circle.  Ruth Wilson Circle will bring raw veggies.  Hope Circle will bring condiments.  Margaret Fritts will bring brewed tea.

        • South Pleasant Grove and Kirksey have been asked to bring desserts for lunch.

        • Kitchen help is needed.  Circles should ask for kitchen volunteers.

        • 40-50 people are expected to be in attendance.

        • Loretta Kroehler will make flower arrangements for 5 tables.

        • Meals will be in the CLC gym.  Study will be in the Contemporary Adult Sunday School classroom.

      • Schedule:

        • 8:30-9:00  Gathering time with Continental Breakfast

        • 9:00-2:00  Study

        • Light lunch at noon (Carol will check with Beth Brown to see if lunch can be earlier).

           

    • Backpack Program

      • Carol Finn explained the process:

        • Supplies are ordered by Dianne Martin from Sam’s.

        • Items are picked up by Tom Adams and Jamie Crady of PTL.

        • UMY unloads supplies into the Sunday School off of the gym for storage.

        • Various groups volunteer to assemble the bags.

        • Bags are delivered to North Elementary School on Wednesday of each week.

      • Estimating 300 this year.  It has been 250 in the past.

      • Circle Leaders were asked to go back to their circles and recruit volunteers to pack on Sunday, March 2 & 16 from 2:00-4:30.  Volunteer’s names will be emailed to Carol Finn.  Four volunteers will be needed from each circle.










  • New Business

     

    • New Officer:

      • Margaret Fritts reported that Jennifer Riley is the new secretary replacing Beth Myers who resigned due to a new job.

         

    • April General Meeting

      • Carol Finn reported that Sue Engle from the District Office will speak at the April General Meeting.

      • Ruth Wilson and Friendship Hannah are in charge of the luncheon.

         

    • Women’s Celebration

      • There was discussion of whether to return to the model of including children and youth in the event.  Carol Finn asked that this be discussed by the respective circles.

         

    • Lenten Lunches

      • Holy Week lunches will be as in the past with each circles providing a meal.

      • Schedule will remain

        • Tucker Frost on Monday (Baked Spaghetti)

        • Ruth Wilson and Hope on Tuesday (Hot ham and cheese sandwiches)

        • Wesleyan on Wednesday (BBQ)

        • Friendship Hannah on Thursday (Chicken Tetrazinni or soup)

           

  • Other Business

     

    • General Assembly

      • Will be held in Louisville, April 25-27.  Registration forms are available.

    • Mission Study

      • February 8, 9:00 at McKenzie UMC

      • Topic:  Roma of Europe

    • Lakeshore Spiritual Growth Event

      • April 4-5

    • Carol Finn presented Walk for Mission, a creative way to raise money for missions.  Money will be mailed to district treasurer.

  • Mission Coordinator Reports:

    • Carol Wimberley reported that ladies in her Sunday School have suggested that the UMW reinstitute providing a list of items needed monthly that can be brought in for international missions.

    • Carol Finn reported that Marcia did a great job of publicizing the Sew-a-Thon.

    • Linda Scott reported that 45 photos and all appointments back to 1839 have been located for a church composite.  The composite will be revealed on History Sunday in May.  Oakwood Studios will be producing the composite.  Joe Pat Hutson and Linda Scott are creating a storage space for UMW archives where they can been locked.  Copies can be displayed, but originals should be locked for safe keeping.

       

  • Circle Leaders

    • Friendship Hannah:  Vicky Crafton had nothing further to report.

    • Hope Circle:   Carol Finn read report from Monica Bogle.  They assisted with lunch during Sew-a-thon, contributed to Needline Food Projects as their special project this year.  Bro. Rick will be the speaker for their Feb meeting.

    • Ruth Wilson provided a lunch for Sew-a-Thon, as reported by Jackie Beauchamp.

    • Tucker Frost:  Margaret Fritts reported on current missionaries.  She said that there are lots of plans in the works, but nothing finalized yet.

    • Wesleyan: 

      • Carol Wimberley reported that there is a missionary in Memphis that they stay in contact with. 

      • They had a wonderful Christmas reception with Wesley residents. 

      • They served lunch at Sew-a-Thon.

      • They have sent over $5000 to purchase malaria nets. 

      • They are having a jewelry sale.  This sale is a “please bring your unwanted jewelry” sale.  Jewelry will be packaged and sold on May 4.  Tri Sigma Sorority will assist with this project.  Children will be allowed to buy a “secret” Mother’s Day Gift for their mother.  Will be from 10:00-2:00.

         

  • The meeting was closed by reciting Numbers 6:24 in unison.  The next meeting is scheduled for April 1.
