We are in the process of ordering a new guidebook for the coming year
Carol Wimberley gave an Action Alert: Human Trafficking in the US (Especially in the Super Bowl).
The Super Bowl is one of the largest Human Trafficking
exploitations. The United States is one of the most heavily trafficked nations & I24 is one of the heaviest
trafficked corridor with drugs and sexual exploitations. We need to raise awareness and pray for these situations
60 sec Book Review: The True Cost of Low Prices: The Violence of Globalization
Low prices that benefit first world consumers continue to put the poor at risk as the laborers in third world countries are taken advantage of in order to offer these prices.
Typical 1st grader can name 200 brands! Brand recognition in the US is pervasive in our lives, especially in children and young people. “The media wants us wanting and spiritually sleepy so that we do not see very well.”
“It is “good business” to squeeze and oppress the poorest.”
A very eye opening book on our first world culture goes along with mission study on poverty.
Unfinished Business:
A. Outstanding Methodist Woman Sunday: Kay Gupton
-travel & honorarium for missions
-pin
The pin hasn’t come in yet, but we have a backup because of Nancy Doty
-ushers
-other
Everything is ready to go! All speakers should be on the west side and at their spot 30 minutes before. Vicky Crafton will oversee ushers at early service and Melissa Easley will oversee the ushers at late service.
Sandra Burnett is ready to speak on Sunday. She will not take a fee, but we are reimbursing her travel expenses with $50 from the church.
Kay has written a thank you card and prepared a gift basket of coffee, devotionals, cards from Tucker Frost, and pickles from the Wesleyan circle.
Paula Hulick moved and Linda Short seconded that we use $50 of misc. funds for an honorarium that will be sent to Western Kentucky United Methodist Family Services Adoption Agency and Foster Care in Sandra’s honor.
B. Guidelines for Women of the Year: Paula Hulick
-subcommittee appointed
Kay Gupton, Jan Nutter, and going to ask Nancy Doty will try to meet before our April meeting and plan to come back to the April meeting with suggestions on what should be adjusted and changed.
C. Nominations Committee for 2014 officers
Guidelines required four members.
Now we have Margaret Fritts (chair), Carol Finn, and Iueda Hudson. Iueda cannot serve for health reasons,
so we need two more members. We’ve asked Monica Bogle and will ask Marcia Koenecke.
D. Sew-a-thon: Feb 4-7: Margaret Fritts
Margaret is currently overseeing the sew-a-thon, but Effie reported that it is going great so far! We have had about 30 in and out, and have served around 20 people at lunch. We have also had good publicity
in the newspaper. John Wright (new church member) is reporting on the sew-a-thon.
Each circle is taking a day to serve lunch and on the last day they go out together as a group.
Jackie noted that we have had more first-timers than ever here, and Carol told us about a lady that was very new to Murray who came in yesterday to get connected.

RESPONSE MAGAZINE REVIEW
Message from the President: Challenging every UMW member to invite a friend outside of our church to a meeting. On your birthday, send a card to your birthday mates on the prayer calendars. Volunteer and take a
friend. Order a book from the reading plan and after you’ve read it donate it to your church or a school. As you plan your 2013 Women’s celebration, be sure to include 12-18 year old girls.
Think – Jan. is a time for new beginnings, this is especially true for the UMW! New staff people are featured in this issue. Jan. is human trafficking awareness month.
“From Victim to Survivor” was a great article
Action – there are things we can do about trafficking. The website is available:
www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/act/trafficking with downloadable information on things we can do about this problem. Hopefully next year we can do something before the Super Bowl.
Social Action: Effie Kemp
-Those who are working with jobs are getting cut back on hours and wages and that is happening all over Murray. Many of these people do not qualify for Needline or food stamps, but they still aren’t able to feed their family.
-They sometimes get donations of items (like chocolate milk) that can be delivered.
-There was a program for working mothers that subsidized child care that has been cut… this will effect a lot of
families.
-There are also items that families cannot get with food stamps (toilet paper, laundry detergent, etc.) so we should think about programs we could do to help collect these items.
-Jan proposed that circles take on projects of collecting toiletries for families through Operation Blessing.
Circle chairs talk to circles about items to bring so that circles don’t overlap and report back to Carol and Paula what they would bring.
Communications: Marcia Koenecke
Historian: Donna Toler
Spiritual Growth: Linda Short
Prayer for sew-a-thon, women’s Sunday, and everything else going on!
Circle Leaders:

Friendship-Hannah – Sponsoring the
Valentines Dinner for International Missions, and doing the lunch Wednesday for sew-a-thon.
Ruth Wilson –
New member (Marie Lions)! Some members haven’t received their reading certificate. Ruetta also

their own methods.
