Murray First United Methodist Women’s Executive Board Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, December 6, 2016
In attendance: Monica Bogle, Vicky Crafton, Nancy Doty, Debra Fannin, Carol Finn, Margaret
Fritts, Kay Gupton, Pat Harris, Effie Kemp, Jan Nutter, and Linda Short.
Meeting was called to order by President Jan Nutter. The UMW purpose was read by all
members. Jan welcomed the group and offered the opening prayer.
Sunshine report: Nancy Doty reported for Mary Lou Rayburn. In October and November
sixteen cards, two Thinking of You cards, eight Birthday cards, four Sympathy cards, and two
Get Well cards, were sent out.
Devotional: Linda Short read excerpts from the Prayer Calendar concerning a youth mentoring
program at the Wesley Community Center in Houston, Texas and from the Eastern Pennsylvania
Conference dealing with communication. The devotional was taken from the book Seeing God
in America. This book contains 100 devotionals from across the country. Today’s reading was
“Gateway to Adventure” from Bayfield, Wisconsin and dealt with being fishers of men.
Secretary report: Debra Fannin submitted the minutes from the September meeting for
approval. Motion was made (Effie Kemp) and seconded (Pat Harris) and the minutes were
approved by all. Thank you notes were received from Mission U, from Heather Bennett, and
from the Wesley Foundation. Effie will notify the Board if asked to provide a meal for the
Wesley Center in 2017.
Treasurer report: Monica Bogle presented the Statement of Financial Income and Expense
report for October through November 2016 and the Statement of Financial Position report as of
November 30, 2016. A motion was made (Effie Kemp) and seconded (Margaret Fritts) and
approved by all to accept the report. There was one outstanding expense for a get well gift. The
Board will purchase a gift card for Kendra Shemwell to thank her for her help with the UMW
Directory. Monica also reported that the Board had $3000.00 dollars to spend on mission
programs.
Motion was made (Margaret Fritts) and seconded (Vicky Crafton) to donate $500 to Bears,
Blankets, and Books and $500 to Court Appointed Special Advocates, CASA. Motion was
approved.
Motion was made (Nancy Doty) and seconded (Vicky Crafton) to give $400 to Conference since
our pledge had been previously lowered by that amount. Motion was approved.
Motion was made (Pat Harris) and seconded (Carol Finn) to donate $250 to Calloway County
Resource Center and $250 to Murray City Resource Center. Motion was approved.
Motion was made (Vicky Crafton) and seconded (Effie Kemp) to donate $500 to Reelfoot Rural
Ministries. Motion was approved.
Motion was made (Nancy Doty) and seconded (Effie Kemp) to donate $300 to Main Street Youth
Center and $300 to Life House. Motion was approved.
Program Secretary report: Jackie Beauchamp was absent. Carol Finn reported that books
for the UMW Reading Program have been placed in the library.
Unfinished business
A. Nativ-A-Tea - The Nativ-A-Tea will be held on December 11, 2016 from 2 - 4pm in the
Social Hall. Jan Nutter thanked Vicky Crafton for the work that has been done planning the
Tea. Sandra Burnett, District President, will attend to install the 2017 officers. Tiffany
Clayton will have a craft for children and Kim Black and Joanne Booker will provide music.
Circles will bring food for the tea. Set up will be on Saturday, December 10th at 10:00am.
Dee Keezer and Loretta Kroehler are in charge of decorations and favors. Three members
from Murray First will serve as District Officers for 2017, Jan Nutter - President, Jackie
Beauchamp - Vice President, and Effie Kemp - Social Action.
B. Reelfoot - Jan reported that 147 jars of peanut better were delivered to Reelfoot and that the
work day at Reelfoot was a success.
C. Backpack Preparation - Jan reported that the backpacks will be assembled on December 18th
from 2 - 4 pm in the gym. Donya Hall will order food through SAMs Club. There was a
reminder to not staple the bags this year.
D. Outstanding Methodist Woman and Outstanding Methodist Youth - Seven nominations for
Outstanding Methodist Woman and two nominations for Outstanding Methodist Youth have
been received. The committee, Courtney Newman, Linda Short, Jan Nutter, Dana
Stonecipher, and Mayda Ragsdale, will meet in January 2017 to review the nominations.
E. Nominations - Vicky Crafton reported. A motion was made (Kay Gupton) and seconded (Pat
Harris) to approve the Board Members for 2017. Motion was approved. UMW Board

Margaret Fritts and Mary Ellen Walker, and Wesleyan - Karen Guthrie and Carol Wimberley.
Vicky asked that each Circle provide a representative to serve on the Nominations Committee
and a representative to assist with Membership, Nurture, and Outreach.
F. Craft Fair - Margaret Fritts reported that the fairs were even better than last year and that
there are plans to hold them again in 2017.
G. World Thank Offering - Monica Bogle reported that an offering of $751.40 was received.
New business
A. Sew-A-Thon - Margaret Fritts reported - There has been a change in the date for the Sew-A-
Thon. Set up will be January 26th and 27th of 2017 and the event will take place January 30th
- February 3rd. Circles will provide lunches: Monday - Tucker-Frost, Tuesday - Hope and
Ruth Wilson, Wednesday - Wesleyan, and Thursday - Friendship-Hannah. Anna Wright has
prepared an instruction booklet and the instructions are also available via thumb drive.
Margaret stressed that more people are needed to sew the dresses.
B. Women’s Ministry Sunday - Women's Ministry Sunday will be held on February 19th, 2017.
Amanda Crice will be the speaker.
C. Women’s Celebration- Nancy Doty reported. She and Monica Bogle have met and would like
chairs for a Set Design/Costume and Props Committee and a Table Decoration/Prize Patrol
Committee. The set design will be a living room scene with a window. A grey wig and bow
tie are need for the costume Margaret Fritts agreed to serve on this committee. Kay Gupton,
Linda Short, Jann Nutter, Pat Harris and Monica Bogle agreed to serve on the Table
Decoration/Prize Patrol Committee. The Mystery Theater will take place in three rounds.
Appetizers will be placed on the tables. The Theater will feature Round 1 followed by dinner,
Round 2 followed by dessert, and then Round 3. Monica will be casting actors in March.
D. April 2017 Pink Impact - Monica Bogle reported. Murray First has the opportunity to co-host
this event with Murray First Baptist. This event will be in the form of a video presentation and
will be open to all area women. A motion was made (Effie Kemp) and seconded (Linda Short)
to plan for this event. Motion was approved by all.

Membership & Nurturing - Marcia Koenecke absent
Education - Pat Harris - Pat reported from the October and November issues of Response
magazine. She highlighted the “Think” page and the articles “A Fresh Wind Blowing” and “Young
Women Become Limitless” in the October issue. In the November issue she described items from
the “Bright Lights” section.
Social Action - Effie Kemp - The speaker for the Call to Prayer & Self-Denial meeting on March
28th, 2017 will be Kelly Russell from Paducah and the program will deal with Human Trafficing.
Communications - Nancy Doty - 2017 directories have been given to Kendra Shemwell for
printing and will be available for distribution in January.
Spiritual Growth - Linda Short - Three Christmas cards were sent missionaries. Linda delivered a
Christmas Prayer.
UMW Book Club - Carol Finn - The meeting time for the Book Club is the second Monday of the
month at 11:30. The 2017 list of books will be:

March- Soul Repair by Rita Nakashika Brock and Gabriella Lettini or Living Into Hope by Joan

Prayer Shawls - Debra Fannin - Meetings to knit and crochet are still being held on the first Sunday
each month from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the Conference Room.
Circle Reports
Hope - Monica Bogle - December will be the last month to collect cereal boxes.
Friendship-Hannah - Kay Gupton - Kay thanked everyone for supporting the annual Thanksgiving
Dinner. Approximately 250 were served. The Circle is sponsoring a family as part of Tiger
Christmas.
Tucker-Frost - Margaret Fritts - Cookies were provided to the National Guard. There are still
some items left for sale from the craft fair.
Wesleyan - Pat Harris - Pickle sales continue to fund their missions. This year they are giving out
decorated wooden Christmas trees to Wesley Center residents.
Jan passed out information so that members can register with United Methodist Women. This
information will be given to Circle members.
The meeting was closed with a reading from Colossians 3:16-17.
