Agenda
-Call to worship: purpose statement/welcome/opening prayer-Carol FinnThe meeting opened with our purpose statement and prayer.
-Sunshine report- Nancy Doty
Nancy handed out the Sunshine report document. Steve Kroehler was added to the list. Nancy led us in a prayer for these people.
-Devotional/prayer calendar-Linda ShortLinda shared a devotional from a book called Peace Is Every Step, written by a Buddhist, and it tells about how to have peace in every step of life. She read a chapter called "The Dandelion Has My Smile". It talks about how smiling can help bring peace and joy to our days. Smiling can relax muscles in our face, and can be so calming. Linda also read an excerpt from the prayer calendar. It talks about buying gifts for those in need at Christmas time, to share love and make better children for our world.
-Secretary: approval of minutes/correspondence-Beth Myers/Amber MeadowsThe minutes from the last meeting were approved as written.
-Treasurer’s report; approval of proposed 2014 budget- Monica BogleA movement was made to approve the 2014 U.M.W. Budget by Paula.Effie seconded the motion.Budget was approved.
-Program secretary- Jackie Beauchamp
-Unfinished Business: A. UMW Reading Program (are books ordered?)-update Jackie BeauchampAll of the books, except one for the Reading Program are here but have not been catalogued and put in the library yet. Monica will purchase that missing one from Amazon. It is a children's book.
Jackie said that the total number of books ordered was 20 books. Total will be about $265, but Monica will tell us for sure.
B. Jackie has the prayer calendars and program books already and they have been distributed.
World Thank Offering- update Carol FinnCarol thanked everyone, starting with Linda for helping with the skit they had. Thanks to Friendship-Hannah and Ruth Wilson for good food that day. There was a large crowd present. The final figure for the offering will need to come from Monica.Christmas Tea, Sunday, December 8th from 2:00 to 3:30-Donna TolerCarol began with starting that Martha Campbell is planning to come at the beginning of the Tea to install the officers. This should be brief. Joan is going to play the piano. Donna told about the weather forecasted. We need to make a decision now if we are going to cancel it. We don't want to spend more money on it if we think there will be bad weather. People often don't come out in bad weather. Are there other dates that we can look at if we decide to cancel?
Right now the plan is to get set up on Thursday. It was suggested that we have a lot into the tea already, maybe it would be better to go ahead as planned. If Church is cancelled on Sunday, then the rest of the day activities will be cancelled as well. People from other districts are invited, so we would need to make sure that people would be informed if it is cancelled. It was suggested that those that can drive are willing to pick up others who can't.
It was decided to go ahead with the tea plans, and purchasing the drinks. If we need to cancel, then we will do that closer to the time. The drinks can be used for other activities.
Donna would like two people to help set up and help clean up the day of the event. She will be coming in Thursday to set the tables where they want them. They will wash the glass dishes from CLC kitchen. She needs clear glass plates or silver plates for cookies, sandwiches, and candy. It will be a help-yourself tea. There will be a separate table for the young ones along with activities for them to do. Please bring stuff Sunday morning and place in the back of the kitchen. Set-up on Sunday begins about noon or 1:00. Katie and the youth girls will be using the social hall on Friday night and Saturday morning, which is why we can't fully set up before Sunday. Katie will make sure the tables are still in the right position. We will also have to clean up after the social hall is used for donuts and coffee Sunday morning.
Muffins, cookies, cupcakes, sandwiches will be made by the different circles.
Outstanding Methodist Woman & Youth-update Paula HulickThere are seven nominations for outstanding woman, and three for youth. Carol, Jan, Donna, Jennifer Riley, and Staci Koenig will be on the committee. Selections will be made in January.
Program Directory-update Paula HulickThanks to Vicky who provided information from last year. Nancy Doty helped with computer and proofing. They are completed. They are scheduled to meet here next Wednesday, December 11 to put them together. The other option is to take them to Printing Services or Copy Plus or Office Depot and get them printed, but it costs money. Paula suggested we go get an estimate for getting 125 copies printed. An email will be sent out to decide if we will get them printed or if we will do it ourselves next Wednesday. If the quote is reasonable, then we will have the professionally printed.Women’s Sunday, February 16th-Carol Finn & Kay GuptonKay said we will have Leah Wilkerson, Campus Minister at Wesley Foundation. Katie will do the children's sermon. Normally there are only four circles, but this year there are five circles, so we would have ten ushers if we have two from each circle. Kay will need to know who those ushers are going to be. They may end up having a speaking part. It is up to the chair of each circle to get these people lined up. We may just need one from each circle for the Early Light, and one from each circle for the Traditional. It is suggested to have one definite, and one alternate available for each service from each circle.
-New Business: A. Sew-A-Thon: Margaret FrittsThis is coming up January 27-31. Margaret would like to have the circles to provide lunches. Tucker Frost wants to do lunch on Monday the 27th. Usually prepare food for about 30 people. Hope Circle and Ruth Wilson will help with January 28th. Wesleyan will take the 29th. Friendship Hannah will do the 30th. On Friday, the 31st, they will eat out.
Marcia will publicize this in the Murray Ledger newspaper, newsletter, and bulletin. May even publicize on the Kroger show. It was requested to ask for donations of 100% washable cotton fabric. Fliers will be distributed. Thank you notes are also sent out for those who sign up. Our group pays for the mailing.
B. Mission Study, March 1, 2014, Paris District, Murray First hosting-Carol FinnWe agreed at the last meeting that we host one for February 22, but he lady is not available then, but can do it on March 1. Beth Brown will be conducting the Bible Study. It will be on a book "The Call: Living Sacramentally, Walking Justly". It will be a four-hour study. We will work out all the logistics at the next meeting, but we do know we will provide a light lunch. Lois would like to ask the other churches that are coming to perhaps ask them to bring breakfast items for a continental breakfast. It was also suggested that we ask the other churches to bring desert, and we go ahead and have breakfast already set up from our Church. We may serve potato soup and sandwiches for lunch. Perhaps the schedule will look like this: 9-11, first two hours, 11-12 lunch hour, 12-2 second two hours.
UMW Book Club, January 16th (Organizational Meeting)-Carol FinnCarol will have an organization meeting at 1:00 on January 16th in the Parlor. This is to see how much interest exists in having the book club, how often to meet, what time to have the meetings, etc. Carol is hoping this will encourage herself and others to read more UMW books.
Back Pack Program (Do we want to do?)-Carol FinnThey need someone to head up the backpack program that our Church does every year. This will take place in March for the whole month. An assembly line is used to fill the bags. About 250 bags will be needed. Diane needs to know as soon as we decide today if we are going to do this. The church pays for the items. They usually order everything from Sam's club and a truck was used to transport it all at one time. Stuff cannot be left out at the gym this year. There is a room off the gym that was cleared out and we can store the items in that room. Harold Finn and Mike Nutter have volunteered to deliver them backpacks to North Elementary School each week, usually on Wednesday. Michelle picks up the items from there to distribute them to the other elementary schools. Items are packed into brown bags. Items such as juice boxes, cereals, etc. Can we do 500 in one day? That way we only have to meet twice during the month to assemble them. If we do this, we would have to store 250 in the storage room, because we can only deliver $250 per week. We may need a few men to help with carrying the completed full boxes.
Paula made a motion that the UMW Executive Board and circles take on this mission once a year.Linda Short seconded the motion. All in favor.
Next Board Meeting, February 4, 2014We have been having a good turn out with attendance to the board meetings.
