Murray First United Methodist Women’s Executive Board Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, August 2, 2016
In attendance: Monica Bogle, Vicky Crafton, Nancy Doty, Debra Fannin, Carol Finn, Margaret Fritts, Kay Gupton, Pat Harris, Effie Kemp, Marcia Koenecke, Courtney Newman, Jan Nutter, Mary Lou Rayburn, Linda Short, and Ruetta Turner.
Meeting was called to order by President Jan Nutter. Jan welcomed everyone and thanked them for their continued support. The UMW purpose was read by all members, and Jan offered the opening prayer.
Sunshine report: Mary Lou Rayburn presented the Sunshine Report. In June and July, one Baptism card, nine Thinking of You cards, seven Birthday cards, three Congratulations cards, and one Thank You card were sent out.
Devotional: Linda Short read a devotional, “It Takes a Team,” from the book Love Out Loud by Joyce Meyer. This reading dealt with John and Washington Roebling and the teamwork involved in building a bridge from Manhattan to Brooklyn in 1867. She also read excerpts from the Prayer Calendar concerning a missionary in North Carolina and a ministry in Nepal and then followed with prayer.
Secretary report: Debra Fannin submitted the minutes from the June meeting for approval. Motion was made (Kay Gupton) and seconded (Carol Finn) and the minutes were approved by all. Correspondence was received from Jan Nutter thanking the UMW Board members for their support during Mike’s illness.
Treasurer report: Monica Bogle presented the Statement of Financial Income and Expense report for June through July 2016 and the Statement of Financial Position report as of July 31, 2016. Motion was made (Courtney Newman) and seconded (Margaret Fritts) and approved by all to accept the report.
Program Secretary report: No report due to Jackie Beauchamp’s absence
Unfinished business
District Mission Study - District Mission Study will be held at Murray First on August 27, 2016. Registration is scheduled for 8:30 am and the study will begin at 9:00 am. Fifty to sixty participants are expected. Ruth Wilson circle will provide a light breakfast. Friendship-Hannah circle will provide salads for lunch. Tucker-Frost circle will provide crackers and cheese. Other churches in the district will be asked to provide desserts. The study will be “The Bible and Human Sexuality.” Registration will be by the back door in the gym. The study and the meals will also be in the gym. Carol Finn volunteered to work in the kitchen since she has already attended this study. Wesleyan circle is in charge of cleanup. Volunteers will set up on Friday before the study. A book room will be set up in the conference room. This study was one of the studies presented at Mission U. Monica Bogle and Carol Finn have attended. Another study offered at Mission U was “Climate Justice” which was attended by Effie Kemp and Nancy Doty. It was suggested that this study be considered for a future program.
New business
A. Web Master - Jan Nutter reported. Monica Bogle has volunteered to serve as Web Master to maintain electronic information. A motion was made (Pat Harris) and seconded (Vicky Crafton) to establish this position on the UMW Board. The motion was approved by all.
B. District Mission Project - Monica Bogle reported. Items have been requested to make thirty-five Christmas Boxes for seniors at Reelfoot. A motion was made (Margaret Fritts) and seconded (Carol Finn) to provide items for the boxes. The motion was approved by all. Ruth Wilson and Friendship-Hannah circles will provide seventy cans of tuna. Tucker-Frost, Hope, and Wesleyan circles will provide twelve four packs of toilet paper. Supplies are needed by the August Mission study.
C. World Thank Service and September 27th Board Meeting- The Board was reminded that the October Board meeting and the World Thank Service have been changed changed from October 4, 2016 to September 27, 2016. Monica Bogle and Linda Short are in charge of the program for the World Thank Service.
D. Nativ-A-Tea - Jan Nutter reported - The Nativ-A-Tea will be on held on Sunday, December 11, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the Social Hall. Jan will ask the District UMW President to attend and install the 2017 officers. Vicky Crafton is in charge of the program. During this discussion it was mentioned that as part of our Unit Today requirements, a district officer needs to attend a circle meeting. Jan offered to contact Cherry Pyron to see if she can attend a meeting.
E. Backpack Preparation - Backpacks will be assembled on December 18, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the gym. It has been requested that the bags not be stapled this time.
F. UMY Hootenanny - UMW will provide a game again this year for the Hootenanny. More information will be provided when available.

Mission Coordinator Reports
Membership & Nurturing - Marcia Koenecke - Two Welcome/Information bags were provided to the Hope Circle.
Education - Pat Harris - Pat thanked members for providing information for the the Unit Today report. She reviewed information from the July/August Response magazine “Think” page concerning prayer. She also discussed articles from the “Bright Lights” section dealing with fried pies for missions in Arkansas and providing school supplies in Oklahoma. She also described the “Every Monday” thrift shop in Vermont. From the June Response magazine a book challenge in North Carolina and prison ministry in Pennsylvania were reviewed. This issue also contained the 2015 Conference Giving article with showed that Kentucky exceeded their pledged amount.
Social Action - Effie Kemp - nothing new to report
Communications - Nancy Doty - Nancy suggested that Amanda Crice be contacted to see if she would be interested in speaking in February for Women’s Ministry Sunday. Courtney Newman volunteered to contact her.
Spiritual Growth - Linda Short - Cards will be brought to the next meeting so that Board members can sign. These cards will be sent to people listed in the Prayer Calendar. Jan reported that we need to provide District with a list of UMW members who have passed away.
Nomination - Vicky Crafton - Monica Bogle, Courtney Newman, and Linda Short offered to serve in their current board positions for 2017. Jan Nutter will be the UMW District President for 2017.
UMW Book Club - Carol Finn - The Underground Girls of Kabul will be discussed at the September meeting. Also at that meeting the October and November books will be determined.
Prayer Shawls - Debra Fannin - Meetings to knit and crochet are still being held on the first Sunday each month from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the Conference Room.
Circle Reports
Friendship-Hannah - Kay Gupton - August will be an organizational meeting.
Ruth Wilson - Ruetta Turner - Five women in the circle read 104 books for the UMW Reading Program
Tucker-Frost - Margaret Fritts - In August they will have lunch at The Lakes in Paducah and will visit Sally Alexander. Anna Wright has made a detailed instruction book on how to sew dresses for the Sew-a-Thon. They are also planning another craft bazaar to raise money for missions.
Wesleyan - Pat Harris - They had a summer picnic and also had lunch at August Moon.
The meeting was closed with a reading from Colossians 3:16-17.
