UMW Executive Board Minutes – August 7, 2012
"The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose Purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church."
Members Present: Kay Gupton, Susan Strong, Effie Kemp, Jackie Beauchamp, Bobbie Waters, Pat Harris, Monica Bogle, Jan

1. Call to order, welcome, read purpose;
2. Sunshine report (Carol Finn) – cards sent since 6/5
Sympathy – Rosemary Graham, Posy Lough, Craig Suiter
Get Well – Carolyn Guthrie, Paul Skinkle, Jack Bailey, Jean Smith, Jennifer Riley, Judy Stahler, Louise Poole
Birthday – Paul Skinkle and JD Rayburn (100 years old!)
Encouragement – Freda Lovett
3. Concerns; Prayer – Inez Jones (lost a niece), Steele Family, continue praying for Jennifer Riley
4. Devotional: Linda Short – given by Kay Gupton.
Kay read from James 1 then read a devotional entitled “Lend Me an Ear”. One point to remember is that listen and silent are the same six letters.
5. Prayer Calendar Linda Short – Linda was absent
6. Minutes- Amanda Lough, approval; Correspondence
Minutes were approved
A postcard was sent from Reelfoot Rural Ministries thanking the UMW for their donation to the food pantry.
7. Treasurer's report - Monica Bogle, approved
Very little activity over the summer. We have a balance on hand of $4,286.13
There was a service charge to our account that Monica will be looking into.
8. Program resource Secretary - Carol Wimberley
Carol needs reading lists from circle members by 8/13.
Carol would like to purchase reading books, program books, and prayer calendars at annual day to reduce shipping
expense.
9. 60 second Reading Program Book review
Effie shared about The Latehomecomer by Kao Kalia Yang. This was a memoir of a family from Laos that migrated to the U.S. She highly recommended the book.
Finished Business: Once again Thank YOU!!
1. CMEE report: Pat, Carol, Jackie
The ladies shared that it was an excellent experience.
The topic was poverty. Carol shared that the Wesleyan circle did a booth for the Paris District about “Imagine no Malaria”. They were then asked to do a booth at Collierville for the Annual Day Conference. This is a great honor!
2. District Day Apart - Flatwoods: Vicky, Jackie
There were not as many present as expected. The silent auction was good and the pastor from Lynn Grove did a great job.
3. Women's Celebration (Baby Shower for Layettes) wrap up comments
This was a VERY positive event.
Everyone was pleased with the turn out and the theme.
The room was well decorated. There was disappointment expressed that no one from the hospital was present at the celebration.
Bobbie will be assembling the layettes on August 13th.
On Going Business:
1. Plarn
Carol showed an beautiful finished mat.
The response has been overwhelming and Grace Place has more than enough thanks to everyone’s hard work.
2. Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education – Keep saving and turn in to Vicky!
3. Social Hall Kitchen –Paula was absent, but she and several others have been busy doing great work cleaning
dishes and cabinets. Jerry Gupton, Harold Finn, and several other men did a great job with painting and refinishing
cabinets. Harold plans to take the coffee table home to refinish it.
4. We host District Meeting on August 11th. 9:00 - ?
MOR Breakfast by Friendship Hannah and Tucker Frost, Lunch by Ruth Wilson and Wesleyan.
(Please make sure everyone knows what they are doing. Probably plan for 60.)
Please!!! everyone attend. It should be a fun event. You might even learn something new.
There was some confusion about times and who was responsible for set up and projects, but everything was settled. The
ladies planned to meet at 10am on Friday to set up the gym. Everyone was excited about the hands-on stations that would be
available.
5. Committee for Outstanding Youth will meet as soon as Amanda is back from mission trips.
Monica, Effie and Amanda discussed a possible meeting time of August 30th, pending Vicky’s availability.
6. Movie - Iron Jawed Angels -September 19th - decided to cancel. Can be motivated otherwise if someone will step up and take charge.

Committee presents officer list for 2013, Draft of 2013 Budget submitted to Board, Circles submit officers for 2013 and yearly schedule, and membership updates to Board.

Mission Coordinator Reports:
Membership Nurture and Outreach: Jan Nutter
Jan is making contact with potential new members and plans to keep brochures available on Sunday mornings with her.
Some that she is in touch with are: Shelia Allen, Marilyn Rossi and Valarie Waller
Education and Interpretation: Pat Harris –
UMW has new more flexible rules. There is now money that is used to fund the education of 2 women and circles are able
to use money for things like that.
Pat also shared some articles from Response magazine about Private Prisons. One shocking fact is that the number of
private prisons built is based on 3rd grade standardized test scores!
She also shared a prayer with us that talked about being open to change.
Spiritual Growth Coordinator : Linda Short, absent
Social Action - Effie Kemp
There is a social action conference on August 18th that deals with healthcare, battered women, and human trafficking
Circle Leaders:
Friendship Hannah - Faye Rogers – Next meeting is Monday Aug. 20th, this is a planning meeting. One thing they will discuss is the possibility of doing a Thanksgiving program with the holiday meal instead of the Hanging of the Green because of how far from Advent Thanksgiving will fall this year.
Ruth Wilson - Bobbie Waters – Ruth Wilson has lost Joe Benson (nursing home), Linda Burgess (moved) and Eva Tidwell (passed away) this past summer.
Tucker Frost - Margaret Fritts – It was a quiet summer. In May they went to the synagogue and they did not meet in June or
July. Margaret asked if we can do rotations for lunches at sew-a-thon like the Holy Week rotation. She also noted that Murray FUMC is in the conference newsletter for the sew-a-thon!
Wesleyan - Carol Wimberley – June they had lunch at August Moon, August they went to KY State Park at Kenlake, feeding Angels Attic this month, the past three Mondays they have held craft workshops. They will have crafts at the Kirksey bazaar. They are preparing for the display at Brownsville & Collierville and doing Community Kitchen this coming Sunday.
Effie asked for prayer for her missions with two teams to Nicaragua this September.
Carol is going to Henderson settlement for missions September 30-Oct. 6th.
