Murray First United Methodist Women’s Executive Board Meeting Minutes
Tuesday April 5, 2016
In attendance: Jackie Beauchamp, Nancy Doty, Debra Fannin Carol Finn, Margaret Fritts, Kay Gupton, Effie Kemp, Marcia Koenecke, Jan Nutter, Linda Short, and Carol Wimberley
Meeting was called to order by President Jan Nutter. Jan welcomed and thanked everyone for being in attendance and also thanked the group for the Lenten lunches. The UMW purpose was read by all members and was followed by prayer.
Sunshine report: Margaret Fritts reported for Mary Lou Rayburn. In January, eleven Get Well/Thinking of You cards, one Congratulations card, and eight Sympathy cards were sent. In February four Get Well/Thinking of You cards, one Congratulations card, three Birthday cards, and five Sympathy cards were sent. In March ten Get Well/Thinking of You cards, one Congratulations card, and four Birthday cards were sent.
Devotional: Linda Short provided information from the Prayer Calendar concerning local mission work with families and children in St. Louis, Missouri. She then shared a poem, “Weed Wrestling” from the book Garden Blessings. This reading was followed by prayer.
Secretary report: Minutes from the February meeting were presented: motion was made (Effie Kemp) and seconded (Linda Short) and approved by all to accept the minutes. Correspondence from Paula Hulick, MSU Wesley Foundation, Mary Valentine, and Doris Frazer were received.
Treasurer report: Jan Nutter presented the Statement of Financial Income and Expense report for February through March and the Statement of Financial Position report as of March 31, 2016 that was prepared by Monica Bogle. Motion was made (Kay Gupton) and seconded (Carol Finn) and approved by all to accept the report.
Program Secretary report: Jackie Beauchamp reported that Response magazine has been reordered.
Mission Coordinator Reports
Membership & Nurturing - Marcia Koenecke - Information describing women’s activities and circle information that will be given to women who are interested in UMW was presented. Information in the gift bag included general information for UMW, a rug mug from the Quilters, a pocket prayer shawl from the Prayer Shawl Ministry, book mark and information for the UMW Book Club and cards detailing each circle. Information for the Layette Project and for the Sew-a-Thon will also be added to the bag.
Social Action - Effie Kemp - Following the Executive Board meeting there will be a “Call to Pray & Self Denial” program. Reverend Diane Harrison from Grace Place United Methodist Church will be the speaker.
Spiritual Growth - Linda Short read a poem, “Look on the Sunny Side” from the book Love Gifts by Helen Steiner Rice.
Circle Reports
Hope Circle - Jan Nutter - The Hope Circle will be sponsoring a Father/Daughter Dance on April and would like help with food for the event.
Friendship-Hannah - Kay Gupton - In February eleven couples attended their annual Sweetheart Dinner. In March food was provided for MSU Wesley Foundation, for the Lenten lunches, and for the Prayer and Self Denial service.
Ruth Wilson - Jackie Beauchamp -In March food was provided for MSU Wesley Foundation, for the Lenten lunches, and for the Prayer and Self Denial service. The group had a program on wheelchair wagons that are used in Africa. The wagons are more stable and easier to use on theAfrican terrain.
Tucker-Frost - Margaret Fritts - In March food was provided for MSU Wesley Foundation and for the Lenten lunches. Debra Fannin presented a program describing the Prayer Shawl Ministry at the March meeting. At the April meeting the program will concern a movement to end family detention. She provided letters for circles to sign and return to her to support the program.
Wesleyan - Carol Wimberly - In March food was provided for MSU Wesley Foundation and for the Lenten lunches. She also reported that pickle sales are up. Money from the pickle sales is used for their work with the Murray Wesley Village.
Unfinished business
A. Women’s Celebration - Jan reported. Celebration will be on June 8th from 6:00 - 8:00. A comedian and a quartet have been booked for the entertainment. This year’s Outstanding United Methodist Woman will be recognized. A pot luck dinner will be followed by the entertainment. The quartet and the comedian are donating their time for this event.
B. Ice Cream Social - Jan reported. An ice cream social will be held in May to celebrate the start of Summer vacation. Jan will contact and coordinate the event with Kristen.
New business
1. Candle Burning - Jan reported. Forms are available for the Candle Burning service which will be held on May22, 2015. Forms should be returned no later than May 15th. Nancy will provide information for the Newsletter and for the Enews. There will be a Call to Action and Margaret Fritts suggested handing out forms on that Sunday. She will hand out forms before the first service and Carol Wimberly volunteered to hand out forms before the second service.

Shawl Ministry - Debra Fannin reported. In March a presentation was given to the Tucker-Frost Circle which discussed the Prayer Shawl Ministry. The Knitting Cafe met on March 6th and April 3rd.
UMW Reading Program and Book Club Updates - Carol Finn reported. Five attended the last meeting. The next meeting is on April 14th and the book will be Tilly.
Jan distributed a handout dealing with the UMW Legacy Fund and asked the group to read the information which will be discussed at the next meeting.
Nancy Doty reported that she found the program to be used at the 2017 Women’s Celebration. The program is titled “Stout Reunion” and is a Mystery Dinner. She suggested that a committee be formed in December to plan out the roles for the program.
The meeting was closed with a reading from Colossians 3:16-17.
